Groups of no more then 20 participants will move through sessions concurrently on the following canola and soybean management topics:

Soybean Stations:

Stand Establishment: Cassandra Tkachuk (Manitoba Pulse ) and Amir Farooq (Manitoba Agriculture): demonstrations will show the impact of plant populations, soil temperature at seeding, and depth of seeding on the establishment of soybeans.

Nodulation and Inoculation: John Heard (Manitoba Agriculture), Navneet Brar, and Patricia Ordonez: demonstrations will show the impact of nitrogen, environmental stressors, type of and rate of inoculant product on soybean nodulation.

Aphids and Beneficial Insects: John Gavloski (Manitoba Agriculture): Options for aphid control, the impact of pyrethroid resistance, and the beneficial insects working for you in your field.

Phytophthora and Varietal Resistance: Holly Derksen (Manitoba Agriculture): Management and identification of phytophthora root rot and the stewardship of resistance genes in our soybean varieties.

Canola Stations:

Fertility: Ray Dowbenko (Nutrien), Warren Ward (Canola Council of Canada), Dan Orchard (Canola Council of Canada) Identification of deficiencies and what to do about them, implication of placement of fertilizer on root’s growth and ability to access it and effectiveness of foliar fertilizer.

Stand Establishment: Murray Hartman (Alberta Agriculture), Gregor Sekulic (Canola Council of Canada) Demonstrations looking at some of the obstacles to obtaining optimal canola stand establishment.  Considerations for what is the optimal economic stand density.

Weed Identification: Ingrid Kristjanson (Manitoba Agriculture), Ian Epp (Canola Council of Canada) Test your weed identification skills against Manitoba Top 10 most abundant weeds and others less common.  Considerations for management and stewardship of herbicides will be discussed.

Sclerotinia Management: Luis del Rio Mendoza (NDSU), Lone Buchwaldt (AAFC), Keith Gabert (Canola Council of Canada) An in-depth look at the life cycle of Sclerotinia and what impacts it  and options for management, including new tools and an explanation of the “stem test” for the evaluation of varietal tolerance.
